Family adventures are a great way to make lasting memories – and teach the value of taking the road less traveled. Whether you’re racing around a track or hitting the trails, dirt bike riding is fun for the whole family.

To avoid accidents, it’s important that your child’s dirt bike is properly sized for their age, size, and skill level. Because you know your child best, we recommend taking their personality and physical ability into account as well. From seat height to engine capacity, the right youth dirt bike ensures your rider will cruise with confidence.

Our team here at Redline Powersports Myrtle Beach has listed some helpful tips for selecting the perfect dirt bike for your child. Read on to learn more, then stop by your hometown powersports dealership to check out our huge selection of youth vehicles!

Your Child and Their Skill Level

Because we agree that safety comes first, take the following into account when buying a new dirt bike for your younger rider:

Age

3 to 6 years old
Make sure your child doesn’t exceed 10 mph to prevent injuries. It is also important that they learn to ride on a lightweight bike that’s easy to handle.

7 to 9 years old
By this age, most kids have learned the basics – including the safety rules. Their bigger, stronger bodies can handle a more powerful dirt bike, typically about 50cc. And while they might be very comfortable on the bike, never let kids ride unsupervised.

10 to 11 years
By this age, most kids are ready to jump their dirt bike. Before allowing your child to attempt this, be sure their experience level matches their confidence level – and of course, outfit them with high-quality dirt bike gear.

12 years and older
Depending on skill level, your child may be able to handle a 250cc bike. This is common if they ride competitively. Again, proper supervision is key to avoiding serious accidents.

Size
Weight and height are crucial factors to consider. Because many dirt bikes still use the kickstart method, make sure your child can comfortably reach all the necessary parts. If the bike is too tall or short, operation can be difficult and potentially dangerous.

Experience
If your child is a first-timer or new to a specific type of dirt bike, encourage them to start slow. Show your child the control functions and demonstrate how to start the bike, stop it, etc.

The Dirt Bike Engine Size

While capability varies from one child to the next, here are some general guidelines:

5 to 7 years: 50cc

7 to 12 years: 50cc to 110cc

12 to 14 years: 125cc

14 to 16 years:125 to 250cc

50cc
These bikes are small and lightweight, making them easier to maneuver. Their top speeds are also relatively low, preventing even the most daring drivers from going too fast.

50cc-110cc
While the larger engine is a bit heavier and hits slightly higher speeds, these bikes are still easy to handle.

125cc-250cc
When you get to the bikes with the larger engines, performance shifts from tame to powerful – without much warning. These heftier machines should be treated with respect and handled responsibly at all times.

Youth Dirt Bike Safety Gear

Dirt bike safety gear is a must, so it’s crucial to equip your child with the necessary safety gear.

This includes quality riding safety gear like the following:

  • Helmet
  • Goggles
  • Protective padding gear (chest, back, elbows, and knees)
  • Dirt bike gloves
  • Sturdy boots
